British Queen celebrates

Vaughan Gething emerged victorious in the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest, marking a significant milestone as he prepares to become the first Black leader of Wales’ semi-autonomous

government. Born to a Welsh father and a Zambian mother, Gething's historic win positions him as the inaugural Black leader of a government in the United Kingdom, and as he asserts, of any European nation.

In his moment of triumph, Gething reflected on the historical significance of his ascent, remarking, “Today, we turn a page in the book of our nation’s history. A history we write together.” Beyond the personal honor of his groundbreaking achievement, he emphasized the broader societal shift represented by his leadership, stating, “Not just because I have the honor of becoming the first Black leader in any European country — but because the generational dial has jumped too. I want us to use this moment as a starting point, for a more confident march into the future.”

Currently serving as Welsh economy minister, Gething narrowly secured victory over Education Minister Jeremy Miles in the race to succeed First Minister Mark Drakeford, who announced his impending resignation late last year. With 51.7% of the votes from party members and affiliated trade unions, Gething clinched the leadership, with Miles trailing closely at 48.3%.

Upon confirmation by the Welsh parliament, the Senedd, where Labour holds the majority, Gething will assume the role of first minister, making him the fifth individual to hold this position since the establishment of Wales’ national legislature in 1999.

Gething's election not only marks a historic breakthrough in Welsh politics but also serves as a testament to the evolving diversity and inclusivity within leadership positions. As he prepares to take on the mantle of leadership, Gething's win symbolizes a significant step forward in embracing representation and fostering a more inclusive political landscape in Wales and beyond.
