Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled a significant £875,000 investment to bolster grassroots initiatives addressing extremism, hate, intolerance, and radicalization across London.
This funding injection marks the fifth year of the Mayor's grassroots Shared Endeavour Fund, which aims to empower individuals of all ages in challenging racist and hateful sentiments within their communities. Since its inception in 2020, the initiative has positively impacted over 140,000 Londoners.
The announcement comes amidst concerning statistics revealing a 147 percent surge in "anti-Jewish hate" incidents across the UK in 2023 compared to the previous year, alongside over 2,000 reported cases of anti-Muslim incidents since October 2023—the highest recorded figure in four months since 2011.
The funding will support 25 community projects throughout London, facilitating workshops and educational activities aimed at empowering approximately 50,000 individuals to combat hate. Applications for the new funding stream are now open, with projects able to apply for grants of up to £100,000 until midnight on May 5th, 2024.
While Mayor Khan takes proactive measures to safeguard vulnerable Londoners from radicalization, the government's proposals to halve the budgets for the Home Office's Prevent counter-extremism program in London highlight the urgency of such initiatives.
This latest investment forms part of Mayor Khan's unprecedented £14.8 million commitment to tackle hate, encompassing support for the Community Alliance To Combat Hate (CATCH) partnership. CATCH offers assistance to victims of various forms of hate crimes, ranging from racism to religious discrimination and anti-LGBTQ+ abuse.
Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasized the importance of unity in combating hate, stating, "In London, our diversity is our greatest strength." He reaffirmed his dedication to fostering a safer and more tolerant London for all residents, irrespective of their background or beliefs.
Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, highlighted the escalating challenges posed by violent ideologies, particularly online, underscoring the necessity for robust partnerships and innovative strategies to combat extremism effectively.
