British Queen celebrates

On Saturday, in London's Westminster Abbey, Charles and Camilla were crowned in a grand ceremony, which marked Britain's biggest ceremonial event in 70 years. Thousands of street parties

were held in honor of the King's coronation. William, Charles' heir, paid tribute to his father's service and others who serve, including teachers and hospital workers, in a speech at the evening concert held at Windsor Castle. He said, that Queen Elizabeth would be "very proud" of King Charles on his coronation.

The concert featured performances by Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, and others, while Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and Winnie the Pooh also made an appearance. Charles was shown waving a mini-union flag from the royal box and laughing at jokes.

The celebrations included a "Lighting up the Nation" event, with projections and laser displays illuminating landmarks and areas of natural beauty across the country.

Prince Edward, Princess Anne, and Princess Beatrice and Eugenie also attended "Big Lunch" events, joining some of the estimated 50,000 street parties held around the country. Anti-monarchists, however, criticized the police for detaining some activists for hours on Saturday, saying that the "right to protest peacefully in the U.K. no longer exists." Culture Minister Lucy Frazer responded by saying that she believed the police had managed to strike the right balance. Photo by USAID, Wikimedia commons.
