British Queen celebrates

The UK government has launched the £8 million Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund to propel maritime innovation and harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance productivity.

This funding initiative aims to support projects that will make UK waters safer, operations more efficient, and the air cleaner.

Maritime Minister Lord Davies announced the funding in Southampton, highlighting the importance of embracing cutting-edge maritime technology. From self-driving boats to automated port operations, the use of AI and other innovations promises to boost the economy and provide vital support to coastal communities.

The Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund will initiate feasibility studies to develop smart shipping technologies such as AI, robotics, and autonomous vessels. Winning projects will also require match funding, leveraging additional investment from the private sector.

Successful ports will utilize AI to detect safety hazards, optimize port activities, and reduce environmental impact, thereby enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in UK waters.

Lord Davies emphasized the potential of AI to revolutionize the maritime sector, create jobs, and drive economic growth. This funding initiative aligns with the government's strategy to decarbonize shipping while enhancing safety for seafarers and fostering economic development.

The competition will be managed by Innovate UK, a delivery partner of the wider £206 million UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) program, announced in March 2022.

Mike Biddle, Executive Director for Net Zero at Innovate UK, expressed excitement about pioneering smart shipping feasibility studies that will demonstrate commercial viability and environmental benefits.

Alongside business-led innovation funding, Innovate UK Business Connect will facilitate a smart shipping community-building program, providing UK businesses with networking opportunities and support.

Chris Shirling-Rooke, Chief Executive at Maritime UK, hailed the fund as a means to foster innovation and embrace cutting-edge technologies, ensuring the UK remains a global leader in green maritime technology.

Peter Aylott, Director of Policy at UK Chamber of Shipping, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving supply chains, and generating jobs, marking today's funding as a significant step towards realizing cutting-edge technology in the maritime sector.
