British Queen celebrates

In a significant moment marking solidarity and support, the Duchess of Edinburgh undertook a landmark journey to Ukraine, marking the first visit by a member of the British Royal Family since

the tumultuous events of the Russian invasion in 2022. This historic trip unfolded on Monday, packed with engagements aimed at fostering ties and showcasing unwavering support.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, commenced her itinerary by meeting with the embattled President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska, following a request extended by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Her presence was not merely ceremonial; rather, it symbolized a tangible demonstration of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, particularly those profoundly affected by the ongoing conflict.

A press release from Buckingham Palace underscored the Duchess's mission, emphasizing her commitment to championing survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. Carrying a message from King Charles, Sophie conveyed not only royal support but also a deep empathy for the struggles endured by individuals and families amidst the turmoil.

Venturing beyond official meetings, Sophie immersed herself in the reality on the ground, visiting a United Nations Relief Centre in Kyiv. Here, she gained firsthand insight into the vital work carried out by the UN’s Population Fund, which extends crucial psychosocial and legal support to survivors across 12 cities in Ukraine. Engaging with volunteers, the Duchess witnessed the compassionate efforts directed towards mental healthcare for those scarred by conflict-related trauma.

Her journey of empathy led her to the Romanivka Bridge, a poignant symbol of Ukrainian resilience amidst adversity. Destroyed to impede the advance of Russian forces, the bridge stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of resistance. Additionally, Sophie paid her respects in Bucha, a town tragically marked by lives lost in the ongoing struggle for freedom and sovereignty.

The evening culminated in an eloquent address by Sophie at the United Kingdom’s Ambassador’s residence. Here, she shed light on the profound human toll exacted by conflict-related sexual violence, particularly on women and girls. Amidst the sobering realities, the Duchess also highlighted the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people, expressing hope for their eventual return to a peaceful homeland.

In her poignant reflections, Sophie encapsulated the essence of her journey - a journey not only of diplomatic significance but, more importantly, a journey of solidarity, compassion, and unwavering support for a nation striving for peace and justice.
