A day meant for celebration turned tragic in Liverpool as a car collided with a crowd of fans during the club’s Premier League trophy parade on Monday evening.
The incident took place around 6pm on Water Street in the heart of the city centre, where thousands had gathered to cheer on the team after their historic 20th league title win. Witnesses reported the vehicle beeping as it moved through the densely packed crowd before coming to a stop. Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, where multiple people were reported injured.
Images from the aftermath show a person being taken away on a stretcher and another being helped by a police officer. Footage shared on social media captured the distressing moment of the collision and the chaos that followed, with police cordoning off the area and a significant emergency response in place, including ambulances and a fire engine.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, and the vehicle remained at the scene. Merseyside Police confirmed:
“We were contacted just after 6pm on Monday, 26 May, following reports a car had collided with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently in attendance.”
North West Ambulance Service also issued a statement:
“NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre following reports of a road traffic collision. We are working with other emergency services to ensure those affected receive medical assistance as quickly as possible.”
Liverpool City Council added that it was liaising with Merseyside Police and would provide updates when available.
The incident marred what had been a jubilant day for the club and its supporters. The trophy parade began shortly after 2pm, with stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk leading the celebrations atop an open-top bus. The 10-mile route through the city was lined with thousands of fans, despite the rain and a number of road closures.
Supporters, many waving flags and holding signs, packed the streets as the red bus—emblazoned with the word “Champions” and the Premier League trophy—rolled by. Despite official guidance against using flares, many were seen being lit along the route.
The club’s owner John W. Henry was also present on the bus, visibly bundled against the wet British weather as the team celebrated their latest triumph.
