Scottish communities can now access a new £4 million funding initiative from Great British Energy to support local clean energy projects. The goal: cut energy bills, strengthen energy security,
and empower communities to take charge of their power supply.
The funding is part of the broader £8 million Community Energy Generation Growth Fund, a joint effort between Great British Energy and the Scottish Government. It will support a range of community-led green projects—from onshore wind and rooftop solar panels to small-scale hydropower systems.
By enabling local ownership and profit-sharing, the initiative allows communities to reinvest earnings into local priorities, from infrastructure improvements to lowering household energy costs.
This investment reflects the UK government's commitment to clean, secure, and community-driven energy solutions—giving people across Scotland a tangible stake in the country’s energy future.
Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said:
“This is our clean energy superpower mission in action – putting communities in the driving seat of energy generation and making sure people profit.
Great British Energy wants to kickstart a community energy revolution, empowering our towns and villages to become mini energy producers and reinvest profits back into the local community”. Photo by Rosser1954, Wikimedia commons.
