The UK government is updating its secret war plans amid increasing fears of a potential military attack by Russia, following repeated threats from Moscow in response to Britain’s ongoing
support for Ukraine.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has ordered a review of Britain’s homeland defence strategy, focusing on how the nation would respond to a foreign military strike. Officials are currently revising protocols for safeguarding critical infrastructure against missile strikes, cyberattacks, and even nuclear threats.
The plan will also detail emergency procedures for protecting ministers, the Royal Family, and essential public services in the event of war, according to The Telegraph.
This update follows recent warnings from the Kremlin and Russian state media figures, and comes after January’s risk assessment concluded that a successful strike on UK soil would likely cause civilian and emergency service casualties, along with major economic disruption.
Last month, the UK tested its air defences in a simulation of the first night of a Russian-style bombardment, based on Ukraine’s experience. The results were described as grim. Air Commodore Blythe Crawford noted the exercise revealed serious vulnerabilities, including a shortage of airfields and lack of protective shelters for fighter jets.
Amid calls for a UK equivalent to Israel’s Iron Dome system, defence officials are urging urgent upgrades to missile defence capabilities.
In October, MI5 director Ken McCallum said Britain’s involvement in Ukraine has made it a prime target in the eyes of the Kremlin, warning of an increase in Russian-backed aggression, sabotage, and assassination plots. He revealed that investigations into threats from hostile states surged by 48% over the past year.
A government spokesperson stated: “The UK has robust plans in place for a range of potential emergencies, developed and tested over many years.”
